A properly designed grounding system is the foundation of electrical safety and equipment reliability. At SAM Engineering LLC, we specialize in advanced grounding and protection solutions for complex industrial environments — from substations and switchyards to data centers and manufacturing plants.

Our work ensures that fault currents have a safe path to earth, step and touch potentials remain within safe limits, and protective relays operate correctly under fault conditions.

Grounding & Protection

Grounding services:

  • Substation and switchyard grounding grid design

  • Step and touch potential analysis (IEEE 80)

  • Soil resistivity testing and interpretation

  • Equipment grounding for industrial facilities

  • Lightning risk assessment and protection systems

  • Grounding for sensitive electronics and data centers

Protection services:

  • Protective relay coordination studies

  • Relay setting calculations and recommendations

  • Coordination with utility protection schemes

  • Breaker and fuse coordination (TCC analysis)

  • Arc-resistant equipment specification

Why proper grounding matters:

  • Prevents dangerous step and touch voltages

  • Reduces equipment damage during faults

  • Improves lightning and surge protection

  • Required for IEEE, NEC, and utility compliance

  • Lowers electrical noise for sensitive loads

We serve Nevada and Texas with practical, field-ready designs that balance safety and cost.

FAQ – Grounding & Protection

Do I need a grounding study for an existing facility?

Yes, especially if you’ve added new equipment, experience electrical noise issues, or are preparing for a safety audit.

What is step and touch potential?

Step potential is the voltage difference between a person’s feet during a ground fault. Touch potential is between hand and foot. High values can be fatal.

Do you provide soil resistivity testing?

Yes, we can coordinate or perform soil testing to accurately model grounding system performance.

Can you stamp grounding drawings?

Yes. All grounding and protection deliverables can be P.E. stamped for Nevada or Texas.
