Substation design is a core competency at SAM Engineering LLC. Our principal engineer has designed and supported power infrastructure for heavy industry, energy terminals, data centers, and utility distribution systems. We deliver reliable, safe, and cost-effective substation solutions tailored to your voltage class, site constraints, and operational requirements.

Whether you need a new greenfield substation, an expansion of an existing yard, or a retrofit of aging equipment, we provide full engineering support from concept through construction.

Our substation design services include:

  • Greenfield and brownfield substation layouts

  • Medium and high voltage design (up to 230kV experience)

  • Equipment specification (transformers, breakers, switches, CTs, VTs)

  • Protection and control (relaying, SCADA integration)

  • Grounding grid design and analysis

  • Clearance and safety compliance (NESC, IEEE, OSHA)

  • Foundation and conduit routing coordination

  • Construction drawing sets with P.E. stamping

Industries we support:

  • Oil & gas terminals and processing facilities

  • Data centers and technology campuses

  • Manufacturing and heavy industrial plants

  • Water and wastewater treatment facilities

  • Utility distribution and substation upgrades

Why SAM Engineering for substation work? We understand that a substation is not just equipment — it is the heart of your facility’s reliability. Our designs prioritize safety, maintainability, and long-term performance.

FAQ – Substation Design

What voltage levels do you typically design?

We have experience from low voltage (480V) up through medium voltage (4.16kV, 13.8kV, 34.5kV) and high voltage substations (69kV–230kV range based on experience).

Do you provide stamped drawings for permitting?

Yes. All substation drawing sets are reviewed and stamped by our licensed P.E. for Nevada or Texas.

Can you coordinate with the local utility?

Absolutely. We work with NV Energy, Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, and others on interconnection and metering requirements.
